opera art sneak peak

I like how simple and flirty Carmen is in this image. I thought using visual double meanings important in holding this series together. The images are so simple it needed a strong concept to carry it through.

Figaro’s story made it easy to come up with this image.

This one was more challenging. I quickly started sketching stormy waters in the same style as the hair but it lacked the double meaning. I wanted to use hair some how to keep it within the series. After several rounds I came up with this dreamlike interpretation of the Flying Dutchman.

I think the design concept came to Mike after seeing one of my large paintings like this or this hanging on the wall. I like how it brings opera to a more personal level. Like being at home and looking at something fun and pretty. Shameless plug: Mike (husband) is a partner at Square One Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is their second season working with Opera Grand Rapids.

  1. As a graphic designer, I really enjoy how these are composed. Big, quiet, lovely work.
